When Milda and Simon asked me to photograph their wedding at the Petersham Hotel in Richmond, I almost broke into dance! I used to live in Richmond, and attended college there years ago, so I was super excited to have the opportunity to visit my old hangout again! Milda is originally from Lithuania and Simon is from London. Having Richmond Park as the backdrop for their photo’s was perfect, as it made Milda’s fiery red hair and beautiful pale skin pop right out!

London holds a special place in my heart. Now that I no longer live there, I love going over in the summer to catch up with friends, and do a bit of shooting (and shopping!). I love the energy of the city, the melting pot of nationalities, and never running out of things to see and do. I feel like a kid in a candy store! I had just been to see the Rankin exhibition on Brick Lane with a few photographers, and we decided to end it off with a drink at a little cafe. I spotted a young woman with red lips and red hair, sitting on a red leather chair, with an interesting mural on the wall behind her. I asked her if she would mind if I took a few photo’s of her, as she looked like she fitted into the scenery so well. We got chatting and she said she’s from JHB, and is now living in London, and that she always sits in the same red chair and reads a bit there everyday before heading off to work. Thanks Jessica – you look like a porcelain doll sitting in that chair!

I’ve known Chantelle since junior school…a long, long time ago! We lost touch through high school when we ended up at different schools, then caught up again in London in our 20’s. I was so chuffed to hear she was preggers, I couldn’t wait to do a shoot with her, hubby Andrew and their first ‘child’, Buddy the labrador. In some of the shots, I got Chanti to ‘zhoosh’ up her hair (her maiden name used to be Wilde!), and ended up with some photo’s of her looking like actress Sienna Miller.

My super cool cousin Robbie lives in London with his super cool wife, Penny. (I had to say that, otherwise he’d feel left out!) I wanted to do a maternity shoot for them as a gift, as I don’t get to see them often. Their baby is due any moment now – I was hoping their daughter Pippa would be born before I left London, but no such luck! We headed off to a park near their house just before sunset, then went out for Thai afterwards. I was dreaming of Pad Thai before the shoot, so had to keep focussed!

How is this for lucky!? During my trip to Egypt, I was chatting to friend saying how cool it would be to shoot a wedding in Egypt. Well…that didn’t happen!!! But on arriving at Cairo airport around 3.30am, there was a bride and groom waiting to board the same flight…and they were still in their bridal gear. I approached them, introduced myself, and asked if I could please take a few photo’s of them! The bride was delighted and the groom gave an uncertain ‘yes’ before following me to a spot that was clear of people. I managed to get a quick few photo’s before they headed to board the plane. They had just left their wedding and were heading away for their honeymoon.

On a day in Cairo when I was feeling sick, I had just finished walking around the pyramids and couldn’t face the trek back down to the exit. Harold the camel obliged!

I met Natasha Wiening, a UK based photographer, last year at a David Beckstead workshop. We hit it off and stayed in touch on email and facebook, and she invited me to join her in Egypt for a holiday. I had originally planned to go to Barcelona for some inspiration, but Natasha convinced me (thankfully) to go to Egypt instead. I’m so glad I did, as it was one of the best holidays i’ve had – I got to snorkel which I haven’t done in years and it was like a meditation – a chance to switch off from the hustle and bustle of life, and be surrounded by a whole lot of ‘Nemo’s’ and stunning coral. We spent most of the holiday in El Gouna on the Red Sea, but I desperately wanted to see Cairo, so took a seven hour bus journey….only to have a fever for two days…oh, and then later to discover that I could have taken a 40 min. flight which only cost a bit more! Between headaches and fainting spells (why oh why on the only two days I had in Cairo!!!), I got some cool shots.

I absolutely love shooting weddings in the UK! Tina and AJ got married in Oxford, and had their reception on a beautiful huge, country farm. I arrived early to photograph the decor and was so excited, I didn’t know where to start! There was so much to photograph, and the colours and decor just ‘popped’. Wedding moods vary at every wedding – Tina and AJ’s ROCKED! There was so much positive energy and love flowing throughout the day, and everyone (not just some!) was just super happy. As you can probably tell from previous blog entries, I love photographing shoes. Besides Tina & AJ’s shoes stealing the ’show’, both brides looked amazing in their stunning pink and turquoise dresses. Their wedding has to win the award for the most stunning, funky and unusual shoes I have ever seen in my life! Someone in South Africa should fill that gap in the market!!!
