Sue has been one of my best friends since high school, which is a very verrrrrrry long time ago. Her and hubby Wayne have a cute little daughter Grace who’s now three…and now they are expecting twin boys! They are going to have their hands full, but I think it’s exciting times ahead. I wanted to do a mix for Sue’s shoot – part maternity, part ‘boudoir‘-maternity. Sue loves antiques and all things arty, so I wanted to bring some of her personality into the shoot and show how being pregnant is actually quite sexy too!

Sue & Wayne’s maternity shoot
Tuesday, August 10th, 2010Lauren & Bryan’s Maternity shoot
Tuesday, June 29th, 2010Lauren, Bryan, Jessie and Jack met up with me in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap also known as the Malay Quarter, on a sunny Sunday morning. I thought it would be stunning for a shoot as the colourful houses and cobbled roads are so full of character and charm. We had a super relaxed morning ambling through the streets. This warm and lovely little family are so down-to-earth, they have made me want a little family of my own (even more). Jessie and Jack are two of the easiest & happiest children i’ve met in a long time – when I was photographing Lauren and Bryan, they entertained themselves or sat on the side to watch.
Lauren, at the time of the shoot in mid- April, was about 5 months pregnant…so she is due any day now! The last photo was taken recently – I popped by their house to do a few more as Lauren’s bump was much bigger.
Jacqui & Warwick – Maternity shoot
Sunday, March 14th, 2010The day I photographed Jacqui and Warwick for their maternity shoot, all the elements were in our favour. They wanted something urban – wall signs, funky cargo crates, punchy colour, peeling paint… I arrived at Paarden Eiland a little earlier to scout out the surroundings and found ALL those things. The area was practically free of people and traffic as most of the warehouses closed for the weekend, so we had the whole area to ourselves. It was a very peaceful start to a Sunday – we’d drive a little, find a funky door and shoot, drive a bit more, find something else that looked interesting and shoot a little more. Thanks Jax and Warwick for just going with the flow! Looking forward to meeting little Sebastian.

Marelize & Mike’s maternity shoot at Jo’burg airport
Wednesday, December 9th, 2009Marelize and I go back about a decade! We started our friendship in Cape Town and then she moved over to the UK to be with Mike. Soon after I ended up in London too and we continued our friendship there. I’d been in Jo’burg for a wedding and Marelize was due to give birth any moment….so the only time we could squeeze in a shoot was at Jo’burg airport before I headed back to Cape Town. We had literally 45 min. to shoot, then it was time to board! There were actually some cool spots at the airport – the underground parking had these awesome lights, and then the escalators came in handy too. I hope they can both forgive me for taking so long to upload my blog with some of their photo’s! sorry guys!!! I hope these were worth the wait.

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009Penny & Rob’s Maternity shoot in London
Monday, August 17th, 2009My super cool cousin Robbie lives in London with his super cool wife, Penny. (I had to say that, otherwise he’d feel left out!) I wanted to do a maternity shoot for them as a gift, as I don’t get to see them often. Their baby is due any moment now – I was hoping their daughter Pippa would be born before I left London, but no such luck! We headed off to a park near their house just before sunset, then went out for Thai afterwards. I was dreaming of Pad Thai before the shoot, so had to keep focussed!

Nicola & David’s maternity shoot in Folkestone, England
Saturday, July 26th, 2008I met Nicola Dove, one of the most warm, caring and awesome photographers, when I was studying photography in London. I was assisting a friend of hers, Simon, and he introduced us when I popped into their office one afternoon. Nicola was sorting through some images for an exhibition called ‘Facade’, and I remember looking at one of them, and my eyes welling up with tears. Something in the way that she shoots, captures so much emotion and energy. I assisted her on a few shoots, one which took us to Japan in 2006, and we’ve remained good friends ever since. Please have a look at her website, she is incredibly talented and constantly amazes me with her ideas. I feel incredibly blessed that I could photograph her and gorgeous hubby David, before little Tommy was born.

Maternity shoot in Havana, Cuba
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008When Jules and I went over to Cuba to last year on a shooting adventure we thought it would be cool to do a maternity photoshoot on our last day in Havana. Cuba is one of the most colourful and beautifully decaying countries I’ve ever had the privilege of visiting. We got up early and ventured out to the streets before the city woke up, and had a lot of fun with the colourful walls and funky cadillacs.
